On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an bold beginning to his administration.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
