Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
